K Surendaran, popularly known by his acronym KS is an Indian politician from the Kasargod district of Kerala. He is currently serving as the State General Secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party and is the candidate from Manjeshwaram constituency for the upcoming Assembly polls. He is well noted for his ability to speak Malayalam, Kannada and Tulu with a precision and eloquence that only native speakers have mastered.
Surendran was born on 10th March 1970 to a middle class family in Ulliyeri, a picturesque countryside away from the hustle and bustle of Kozhikode town. He is married to Sheeba and they have two children namely Harikrishnan and Gayathri Devi.
He was involved with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) since childhood and has shown active participation in social activities right from his school days. After passing out of school, he continued with his unflagging support for the party and took part in various political movements. In the year 1986, Suredran was nominated as the Nagar Secretary of Balussery.
Surendran earned a degree in Chemistry from Sri.Guruvayruappan College, Kozhikode, where he had held the positions of College Unit Secretary and the Unit President of ABVP. A persuasive speaker and a young visionary leader, Surendran was lauded for his oratory skills during college days that gained him far-reaching publicity.
The year 1993 made an eventful turn in Surendran’s political career when he became the District President of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) wing of Wayanad. Later in 1995, he was elected as the State Secretary of BJYM. His association with various issues of social relevance escalated during this time and within three years, he became the State General Secretary of BJYM. In the year 2003, the BJP state unit announced Surendran as its General Secretary. He contested in the 2009 Loksabha elections and the 2011 Assembly elections from the Kasargod Parliament constituency and Manjeswaram Assembly constituency respectively.
He has regularly voiced his concerns over the retrogressed economic and political image of Manjeswaram. According to him, Kasargod is demarcated from the development scenario by both LDF and UDF, and it is a place that government prefers for the punishment transfers of its officials. The prime issues faced by people of Manjeswar are unavailability of educational resources, scarcity of water and Endosulfan effects. Surendran envisions better educational reforms and socio-economic developments in the region and pledges to achieve the same with support from people.
He led several agitations against the government for wiping out corruption from the State. Some of the well known protests that gained him mass support include Kovalam Palace Protection, Kerala University Assistant Grade fraud case, Total 4 You, Kerala Solar Panel Scam and PSC appointments. His agitations demanding resignation of Chief Minister Ommen Chandy for solar scam and bar bribery was confronted with lathi charges and verbal abuses by the police. In a statement to news channels, Surendran accused the chief minister of having no moral authority to continue in power and assured continued protests till resignation of the latter.
